Lower the Cost of Your Solar Installation

Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs)

Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) are a government-backed incentive available for eligible solar photovoltaic (PV) systems with a capacity of up to 100kW. The number of STCs your system can generate depends on factors such as the system size, installation location, and expected energy production

How Do STCs Work?

When your new solar system is installed, it becomes eligible to create a number of STCs based on its projected renewable energy generation over time. These certificates have a market value because electricity retailers are required to purchase them to meet Australia's renewable energy targets. In most cases, your solar installer will manage the STC process on your behalf. Rather than claiming and selling the certificates yourself, the value of the STCs is applied as an upfront discount, reducing the total cost of your solar installation.

Government-supported incentive for eligible systems

No need to manage or sell certificates yourself

Make switching to renewable energy more affordable

Installers can use part of the rebate to get paid to engage with the programme, to win more work and create more jobs

How Are STCs Calculated?

The number of Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) your solar installation generates depends on several important factors. Understanding these factors can help you maximise your rebate and reduce the upfront cost of installing a solar PV system.

System Size

The capacity of your solar PV system has the biggest impact on the number of STCs you receive. Larger systems generate more renewable energy, resulting in a greater number of certificates and a higher rebate value.

Installation Location (STC Zone)

Australia is divided into different STC zones based on average sunlight levels. Properties located in areas with higher solar exposure can generate more STCs than those in regions with lower solar potential, increasing the available rebate.

Deeming Period

The STC scheme is designed to gradually reduce until 2030. The number of certificates available depends on the remaining years in the scheme, known as the deeming period. As this period decreases each year, the total rebate available also reduces.

Expected Energy Generation

STCs are calculated based on the estimated amount of electricity your solar system will produce over time. Systems with higher expected energy output generate more certificates, providing greater financial savings on your installation.
